This calculator does two jobs. In difference mode it tells you exactly how much time sits between two dates — in days, weeks, months, and years. In add/subtract mode it takes a start date and jumps forward or backward by whatever span you give it. It handles the messy parts of the calendar for you: leap years, months of different lengths, and the awkward end-of-month cases that trip up manual math.

Why manual date math goes wrong
People assume every month is 30 days and every year is 365. Neither is true. Months run 28 to 31 days, and roughly every fourth year is 366 days long. Counting on fingers across a February, or across a year boundary, is where errors creep in — and a one-day mistake on a legal deadline or a passport application is not harmless. Letting the tool count is simply more reliable than doing it in your head.
The leap year rule, in full
A leap year adds February 29, making 366 days. The rule has three parts, and the third catches people out:
- Divisible by 4 → leap year (2024, 2028).
- But divisible by 100 → not a leap year (1900).
- Unless also divisible by 400 → leap year after all (2000).
That is why 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not. Over any span longer than a year or two, these extra days add up, and the calculator counts every one of them.
Inclusive vs exclusive: the one thing to double-check
By default the difference is exclusive — Monday to Wednesday is 2 days. But hotels, invoices, and some contracts count inclusive days, where you'd call that 3. If a number seems off by exactly one, this is almost always why. Add 1 when both the start and end day need to count.
The end-of-month gotcha
Adding a month to January 31 can't land on February 31, because there isn't one. The result clamps to the last valid day — February 28, or 29 in a leap year. A consequence worth knowing: month math isn't always reversible. Add one month to January 31 and you get February 28; subtract one month from that and you land on January 28, not where you began. For anything where the exact day is legally binding, calculate it, don't assume it.

Does the day count include both the start and end date?

By default the difference is exclusive — Monday to Wednesday is 2 days, not 3. If you need to count both endpoints (say, every night of a hotel stay), add 1. Check which convention your contract or invoice expects.
How are leap years handled?
